The 1st and 2nd Battalions arrived in Egypt in time to become the only New Zealand unit to participate in the Senussi Campaign. In January 1916, New Zealand’s infantry was divided into three brigades. (NZ 9) 2nd/1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, Colour Party $160.00 NZD. The 2nd/1st Battalion Colour Party composition is the same as for set (NZ8): NZ 1st Battalion. Two subalterns who bear the colours, a warrant officer and two colour sergeants.

A third battalion, the 3rd Wellington Battalion, existed from March 1917 till February 1918. During November 1963 the 2nd Battalion was disestablished and became the 1st Battalion Depot.

The 1st Battalion The New Zealand Regiment was reactivated at Waiouru on 1st Aug 1957, especially for service in Malaya. As the tour of duty of the infantry in Malaya was going to be an extended one, the 2nd Battalion was raised in 1959 to relieve the 1st Battalion in Malaya at the end of that year.
